Willem Witsen created this drawing with chalk, but it's the faint image of swirling clouds that command our attention. These clouds echo the motif of celestial bodies and atmospheric phenomena seen across cultures. Think of the Baroque period, when clouds were used to create dynamic and emotional scenes, and even earlier, to the Renaissance with their symbolic representation of the heavens. The image of clouds has been laden with meaning – divine presence, ephemeral existence, and transformative power. The subconscious mind finds solace and perhaps unease in the unpredictable nature of the clouds, in the fleeting dance between light and darkness. Such symbols and iconography possess a non-linear, cyclical progression, resurfacing, evolving, and taking on new meanings in different historical contexts.
