Om "Kampen", "Evnen" og "Erkendelsen". Desuden løse penselstrøg 1913 - 1914
Dimensions: 337 mm (height) x 207 mm (width) (bladmaal)
This watercolour on paper, made by J.A. Jerichau (II), is held at the SMK - Statens Museum for Kunst. It looks like a page torn straight from the artist's sketchbook. Jerichau's loose brushstrokes swim across the page in muted blues and reds, as if in a dream. You can almost see the artist hovering over the page, brush in hand, thinking what mark to make next. The paint is so thin it barely stains the paper – and the writing underneath is still legible! The lower sketch of foliage, in quick strokes of earthy green, reminds me of other artists, like Joan Mitchell, who captured landscapes in a similarly gestural manner. It's as if Jerichau is thinking through painting, trying to capture the essence of a flower, or some vague scene, that teases the border between abstraction and figuration. Artists engage in a timeless conversation, where they leave traces and gestures like Jerichau’s watercolour; each mark contributes to the dialogue of painting itself.
