Henri Matisse made this charcoal drawing of a reclining figure on a checkered sofa at an undetermined time, but you can feel the hand of the artist at work. Matisse is working out how to render the figure, exploring the draping fabric, the pose. Look at the geometric rhythm of the sofa against the languid curves of her body. It’s like he's asking, "How can I capture this scene, this feeling?" The model props herself up on her elbow and gently rests her face in her hand; the drawing is full of searching lines. You can almost feel his hand moving across the paper, adding shadows, deepening the tone, and allowing the figure to emerge. The background is really interesting with these strange circle and crosses. What was he thinking? Matisse is in conversation with artists of the past but speaking in his own unique voice. It’s not about perfection; it’s about the process, the exploration, and the conversation between the artist, the model, and the world.
