Curator: This is Albrecht Altdorfer's small but powerful woodcut, "The Crucifixion." Editor: It feels claustrophobic, doesn't it? All that dense linework creates this feeling of stifling grief. Curator: Absolutely. Altdorfer, who was born around 1480, was deeply concerned with social justice. This piece, despite its traditional subject matter, subtly critiques power. Look at how the figures are arranged. Editor: The mourners are huddled at the base, almost crushed, while in the background you see soldiers going about their business. It makes you think about complicity. Curator: Precisely. And how that plays out in contemporary culture. Editor: It's heavy, though, isn't it? I need a bit of light after that. Curator: But it leaves you thinking, which is the point. Editor: Yes, but also feeling. Art is about both!
