Curatorial notes

Giovanni Andrea Maglioli created this image of a winged seahorse, with an open leaf and pistils at the end of its tail, using an unknown medium. Seahorses are often symbols of strength and power and in the Renaissance, winged creatures evoke a sense of freedom. But this seahorse is not in its natural environment, and the pistils at the end of its tail suggest the possibility of life and growth in an artificial world. Is this a comment on the changes that European exploration and colonization brought to the natural world? This image invites us to think about our relationship to nature. Do we see ourselves as separate from it, or as an integral part of it? How do we balance our desire for progress with our responsibility to protect the environment? It offers no answers, just an invitation to reflect on these important questions.
