Kinder Album painted this untitled scene from Winter Album using watercolors, probably in their studio, and they were definitely feeling things out. The washes of light blue and grey that set the scene make it clear: the artist is working with the idea of coldness. I imagine Album, born in 1982, leaning over the page, trying to figure out what to include. There's a guard, a prone figure under a chandelier, a distant treeline, and a strange sort of tape that suggests an accident or crime scene. Album has rendered the scene with thin, washy strokes to create a dreamlike and slightly unsettling landscape. The naked woman is especially striking; the viewer has to wonder what the meaning is behind the figure. Why a chandelier? Why a guard? All these figures, all rendered in delicate washes, are in stark contrast with each other, but somehow united under Album's pen. For me, the painting becomes a site of inquiry and play. Maybe they were looking at Magritte or de Chirico. I'm inspired to see how Album's imagination comes alive here.
