surrealism
Salvador Dalí made this painting using flat colours, hard lines and mysterious arrangements - typical of his surrealist style. I wonder what it was like for him to conjure up these hallucinatory landscapes? The painting shows us a dreamlike scene with classical statues, a volcano, and strange architectural forms all coexisting in a bizarre setting. I can imagine Dalí working on this, layering different elements of his imagination, shifting things around until it felt just right - you know, that frisson of rightness. The black lines in the foreground really stand out and give the scene a graphic, almost cartoonish, quality. And look how the yellow and brown of the building contrast with the soft blue of the sky, creating a sense of unease and surreal tension. Dalí was so singular, but you can also see him in conversation with other artists who explored the subconscious, like de Chirico. It's a reminder that we’re all part of a long, beautiful chain of creative exchange, bouncing ideas off each other across time and space.
