Benny Andrews drew this "Composition #8 for Trash" sometime in his career with what looks like a fine pen on paper. You know, looking at the lines here, I can almost feel Benny's hand moving across the page, figuring out the composition. There's a dreamlike quality to the whole scene, like a story unfolding. I imagine he wanted to capture a thought, or maybe it was the feeling of being caught between different worlds – one of solitude and observation, and another filled with strange characters, trees, and narratives. That figure in the wide brim hat and cloak, standing off to the side, casts a large shadow. They could be a guardian, a guide, or just someone watching it all go down, and off in the distance, this other figure atop a pile of garbage... I wonder what Benny was thinking when he put that there? It's like he's inviting us to find our own meaning within this image.
