"Costumbres de Antaño y de Ogaño" (Customs of Yesteryear and Today) is a satirical broadside by José María Marés, a Spanish artist who lived a tragically short life from 1850 to 1870. Printed in 1866, the work consists of 48 scenes, presented in 24 pairs, comparing old and new Spanish customs. The scenes, executed in a simple, illustrative style, capture the everyday lives of Spaniards in a lighthearted and often humorous way, offering insight into the social and cultural changes happening in Spain during the mid-19th century. This work, housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, offers a unique glimpse into the visual culture of Spain in the 19th century.
