This photograph of an unknown girl and her dog feels like it’s come from a dream. I imagine the photographer, Gräfin Marie Oriola, setting up her equipment, carefully adjusting the light, and then waiting. There's a softness to this image, a delicate balance of light and shadow. You can almost feel the texture of the girl's dress, the fur of the dog. What was she thinking as she posed? Was she nervous or excited? And the dog, so patient, so loyal. Photography is a kind of painting with light, isn’t it? I look at the softness and the blur and think of 19th century painting. Oriola creates a moment of suspended time, a quiet conversation between the girl, her dog, and us, the viewers. Artists are always in dialogue, each building on the work of those who came before, aren't they? Each medium has different qualities, but there is still space for gesture, feeling, and emotion.
