Constant Puyo’s photograph is a black and white image of a woman and a child in an interior space, made sometime around the turn of the 20th century. I wonder, what was it like to work then, without the digital tools we have now? I think about the darkroom as a space of alchemical transformation, where light and chemistry meet to reveal the hidden image. This image is a bit ghostly, dreamlike. The focus is soft, and the tones are muted, giving the scene an ethereal quality. I see the child's dress, with its delicate lace and ruffles; and the way the light catches the mother's face, highlighting her gentle expression. I wonder about the relationship between mother and child, the unseen stories and feelings that connect them. Photography is a dance between intention and chance. Puyo was part of a movement called pictorialism. He worked with other photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen who were into making photographs look more like paintings, with soft focus, interesting light, and emotional depth. Painters and photographers are all in this ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring one another’s creativity.
