This is Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof's "Titellijst van de bij Scheltema & Holkema's Boekhandel beschikbare werken." At first glance, the artwork’s flat, pale-green plane draws us in. The text, meticulously arranged in a block, creates a visual texture, a play of light and shadow across the surface. The distressed edges of the paper hint at the passage of time, adding another layer to its materiality. Dijsselhof's choice of a muted palette subverts the traditional purpose of a catalogue cover. Instead of vibrant enticement, we find a subtle invitation to look closer. The arrangement of the text, akin to a minimalist grid, challenges our expectations of commercial design. The piece functions as a sign, directing us to a bookstore’s offerings. However, Dijsselhof’s approach elevates the functional to the aesthetic. It reminds us that even in the most utilitarian of forms, there exists the potential for artistic intervention, for a re-evaluation of our relationship with text and form.
