This postcard was sent by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst to Willem Bogtman, and it's got something really touching about it. I imagine Holst there, pen in hand, maybe outside on a slightly windy day, jotting down those looping lines. Look how the ink catches and pools in some places, fading out in others—you can almost feel the pressure of his hand, the moment of his thoughts being captured. I love the personal nature of handwriting, the way you can see the person in the script. He may be writing about the best way to "fall" or "attack." I am touched by the thought he is sharing his thinking with his friend Bogtman. It reminds me that all artists are constantly in conversation, borrowing ideas, riffing off each other's energy, and maybe most importantly, making contact. Just think, Holst’s gesture, Bogtman’s reaction, and now we are all a part of it, too. It's all an ongoing exchange.
