This "Single strip hanging flower vase" was made by Matsumoto Hafū. The artwork consists of a bamboo cylinder with a section cut away to reveal the inside of the vase. It's minimal, and elegant. The single strip of bamboo gracefully curves, forming a delicate vessel for flowers. I can imagine the artist carefully selecting a bamboo stalk, perhaps from a grove near their home, considering its texture and weight. The artist must have skillfully bent and shaped it with precision and care. I wonder what it might have been like to create, carefully cutting the bamboo, then watching as it dried, noticing how the colors shifted into their final place? The artist's hand is evident in the subtle details, showing how the shape allows the flowers to become the focus. The tradition of flower vases and the practice of ikebana remind us that art has an ongoing, inspirational conversation across time. It embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
