"Geschiedenis van een pond chocolade," or "History of a Pound of Chocolate," is a comic strip made by Monogrammist G.J. using what looks like ink and watercolor on paper. The artist is creating a narrative through sequential images, and the colors are light and unassuming. I love how the artist used a restricted color palette to create different scenes. It feels playful, almost like looking at faded memories. Check out the panel with the group of boys fighting over something on the ground – maybe the chocolate is there? The artist has created a sense of chaos by positioning them on top of each other in a pile on the ground. This part of the comic feels like a big explosion, like the chocolate bar exploding across the page. There's a gentleness to this piece, which reminds me a little of the work of Maira Kalman. Both artists celebrate the everyday with a mix of humor and warmth. Ultimately, this piece is about how art can embrace different points of view without getting stuck on one explanation.
