This Inrō case, by Kakōsai, is a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of Japanese decorative arts. It's made from lacquered wood, and what makes this object truly special is the intricate relief carving. The material has been built up in layers and then painstakingly carved away, a demanding process that rewards close inspection. The design features horses on one side and equestrian equipment on the other. The horses have a beautiful weight to them, and possess a subdued elegance. The saddle ends and riding whip give an insight into the equestrian culture that was exclusive to members of the aristocracy. Consider the skilled labor required to create this piece. Lacquering and carving were highly specialized trades. Inrō cases like this were functional objects, but also status symbols. The amount of time and artistry poured into them elevates them far beyond mere utility. The case is an intersection of the material, the process, and the social context in which it was made.
