This writing box was crafted by Hara Yōyūsai in Japan during the early 19th century. Its lid presents a mounted figure whose identity holds multiple layers of meaning. The lone rider evokes images of power, authority, and solitary contemplation. We see echoes of this motif throughout history, from the equestrian statues of Roman emperors to Renaissance paintings of noblemen on horseback, a symbol of command, the horse is laden with subconscious power. Observe the rider's solemn, almost melancholic posture. There is a long-standing tradition in art, where a figure on horseback embodies both triumph and introspection. Consider, too, the emotional weight of the lone rider. Is he a returning hero, a departing warrior, or perhaps a scholar seeking solace? The motif transcends specific narratives, inviting viewers to project their own feelings of longing, ambition, and solitude onto the image. This box becomes more than a mere object; it is a mirror reflecting our deepest emotions and collective memories. The cyclical nature of symbols allows them to resurface, evolve, and take on new resonance across time.

For this writing box, the renowned lacquer artist Yōyūsai was inspired by a poem that occurs in the 9th century Tales of Ise, attributed to the courtier Ariwara Narihira (depicted on the cover of the box). When the protagonist of the story (possibly Narihira himself) comes upon a marsh of blossoming irises, he composes a poem beginning each line with a syllable from the Japanese word for iris (kakitsubata): Karogoromo I have a beloved wifeKitsutsu narenishi Familiar as the skirtTsuma shi areba Of a well-worn robeHarubaru kinuru And so, this distant journeyingTabi o shi zo omou.
