This shoulder cloth, made anonymously with fiber, is a bolt of pure intention. Imagine the slow, deliberate process of its creation, the back and forth, the subtle shifts in color, the steady rhythm of the loom— a kind of meditation. The deep red ground shimmering with intricate golden figures. I see the artist, their mind a hive of activity, contemplating which forms to repeat. What happens if I invert this shape? Or add this color? What happens if I place one motif next to the other? I can't help but think of Agnes Martin. Even though she made grids, she was so interested in tiny variations. How a line might shift ever so slightly to the left. Maybe this anonymous artist was onto something similar. How do you convey a feeling through repetition? What’s the nature of obsession?
