This sash, of unknown date, was made by an anonymous artist with fiber. I love how the overall impression is built up from tiny, distinct marks. It’s like each little dash or knot is a single brushstroke, patiently building this whole world of pattern. The palette feels earthy, grounded – muted reds and browns, sandy yellows – like colors pulled straight from the landscape. Up close you can see the texture: the subtle shifts in weave, the occasional loose thread. I am especially drawn to the large red block. It's such a simple shape, yet it anchors the whole piece, giving the eye a place to rest amidst the complexity of the pattern above. It makes me think of Anni Albers, and how she explored the possibilities of weaving, not just as a craft, but as a real form of art. Ultimately, what I love about this sash is its quiet confidence. It doesn’t shout for attention, but it rewards close looking.
