Nicolas Toussaint Charlet made this print, "Arbeider en groenteboer met een kar", depicting an interaction between two men. Notice the gesture of the man on the right pointing into the distance. Pointing, as a symbolic gesture, extends far beyond simple direction. In ancient Roman art, the "ad locutio" pose, with an arm outstretched, signified leadership and the power of communication. We observe echoes of this authoritative gesture in Renaissance art and beyond, often used to convey divine will or guidance, as seen in depictions of John the Baptist. Here, the act of pointing could be interpreted as a call to action, directing attention towards a shared goal. One can't help but wonder if, beneath the surface, lies a deeper, perhaps subconscious urging towards change or perhaps revolution. Even the mere suggestion of the "ad locutio" pose stirs collective memories and emotions associated with authority, power, and, indeed, resistance. And so, these symbols persist through time, not in a linear fashion, but resurfacing, evolving, and taking on new meanings in each unique historical context.
