Editor: This is M. Lupow's *Exercise in free color use*, a small and very vibrant watercolor piece. I’m curious about the artist’s process. What can you tell me about how Lupow approached the making of this work? Curator: Looking at the material application, the layering of colors suggests a spontaneous process. The artist seems less concerned with a polished final product and more invested in exploring the pure act of applying pigment to paper. This emphasis shifts our focus from traditional artistic skill to the labor and materiality involved. Editor: So, it's the process rather than a specific image that matters most here? Curator: Precisely. It challenges the hierarchy of artistic production, valuing the direct interaction with materials over any preconceived notion of "high art.” What do you make of the size? Editor: It feels like a study. Thank you, I see the piece in a new light now! Curator: Agreed. Considering its size and medium, perhaps it was practice for a larger piece, allowing for free experimentation with color.
