Cy Twombly made *Summer Madness* with paint on canvas, but when exactly? Who knows! Twombly was so good at letting things happen on the canvas. You can really see the movement in the way he applied the paint. The yellows and reds sort of explode, right? Like a flower, or maybe fireworks, it's hard to tell and that's the point! I love how you can see the texture of the paint, thick and thin in different spots, with drips and scribbles. It's like he was wrestling with the canvas, letting the energy flow through him. Look how the yellows at the top bleed into the white, it's kind of beautiful and messy at the same time. I am reminded of Joan Mitchell, another painter who wasn’t afraid to just let it all hang out. What a great reminder to embrace the unexpected in art and in life.
