Yao Shou created "Drinking and Composing Poetry" using ink on paper in the 15th century. Yao Shou lived during the Ming Dynasty, a time when artistic expression was deeply connected to social and intellectual life. This artwork encapsulates the literati ideal of retreating from public life to engage in artistic pursuits. The scholars are depicted in a serene landscape, embodying a sense of freedom and intellectual camaraderie. What does it mean to gather in nature, drinking and creating art together? The painting also reflects the complex interplay between personal identity and cultural values during the Ming Dynasty. As members of the educated elite, these scholars would have been deeply aware of their social standing, and this scene reflects the privileges that allowed them to pursue leisure activities. It offers an intimate glimpse into the lives and values of these men. We’re invited to reflect on the social structures that afforded them this lifestyle.
