Furioso! 2012

Romul Nutiu made this painting called Furioso! with a mix of intuition and bold gestures. I imagine him stepping back, squinting, then lunging forward to add another stroke, constantly shifting and adjusting his approach. There's a real energy to the colours: sunshine yellows, reds, blues, and blacks crashing into each other. See how the brushstrokes are thick in some places and thin in others? It gives the painting a real sense of movement, like a snapshot of a fleeting moment. I wonder what Nutiu was thinking when he laid down those horizontal red bars. Are they barriers, or anchors, holding everything together? Nutiu’s paintings are often like this, built up from layers of marks that feel both chaotic and controlled, a way to find something new.
