Furioso! 2012

Romul Nutiu made this painting, Furioso!, with energetic brushstrokes and a vibrant color palette. It’s like he’s wrestling with the canvas, isn’t it? The texture jumps out at you, doesn’t it? Thick strokes of red and orange create this intense emotional feeling. It’s almost like he’s using the paint itself to express something raw and unfiltered. Notice how the black slashes cut through the brighter colors, adding a sense of urgency. Look at the bottom left corner of the canvas and see how the colors sit right next to each other instead of mixing. This technique adds to the intensity of the piece. Nutiu’s expressive use of color and gesture reminds me of de Kooning’s frenetic energy, but with a uniquely personal twist.
