Romul Nutiu made this painting, Section, with paint and perhaps a few other media too, as it has a very earthy feel. Nutiu's mark-making seems almost frantic, a flurry of strokes capturing the urgency of a moment. The palette is constrained, dominated by reds, browns, and whites, giving the work an overall feeling of being grounded and natural, like looking at a dense forest. I am particularly drawn to the dark tangle in the very center; it is like a knot of feelings made visible. I can imagine Nutiu returning to the canvas again and again, layer upon layer, until the painting reached a kind of resolution, a balance between chaos and order. Nutiu reminds me of other artists, like Anselm Kiefer, who use painting to explore themes of history, memory, and trauma. In the end, art is not about answers, but about embracing the questions.
