Fernand Léger made this ceramic relief titled ‘The Yellow Flame’ sometime around 1952, and what strikes me is the way he’s combined these voluptuous organic forms with the severity of geometric shapes. It’s like nature and the machine shop got together for a dance. The colors are bold, primary. A sunshine yellow, stark black, and a clean white, set against the creamy ground of the ceramic itself. Looking at the texture, the paint looks thick and glossy, each form delineated by a crisp black line, almost like stained glass. See how the yellow flickers and undulates, like a living, breathing thing, but contained, formalized? Léger's work reminds me of Stuart Davis's, in the way they both found poetry in the everyday, elevating it to high art. What Léger does so well is hold these opposing elements in balance, finding harmony in the clash. It's not about answers, but about sparking new ways of seeing.
