Pieter Oosterhuis captured this view of the Spui in The Hague using photography. The stereoscopic image consists of two nearly identical photos, mounted side by side, to create an illusion of depth. The composition is neatly bisected by the waterway, with the architectural facades mirrored in the canal's still surface. This doubling creates a visually complex and somewhat disorienting effect. The symmetry, however, is imperfect, disrupted by subtle variations in light and shadow. Note how the artist uses light to accentuate the linear perspective, drawing the eye towards a vanishing point in the distance. Oosterhuis masterfully employs the stereoscopic technique to invite the viewer into the scene. The resulting depth destabilizes the conventional flat picture plane and challenges our perception. The photograph prompts us to consider how such structured compositions engage with broader questions about realism and representation. In this early photograph, Oosterhuis uses formal elements to probe the nature of visual experience itself.
