Dimensions 10.16 x 12.7 cm (4 x 5 in.)

Editor: This is an untitled photograph by Peter James Studio, showing people in a church. The black and white tones give it an aged feel, almost like a memory. What stories do you think this photograph is trying to tell us? Curator: Considering this image through a lens of social history, I see a powerful statement about community and belonging. The church, often a cornerstone of Black communities, is a space for collective identity, resilience, and resistance. How does the act of gathering in this space challenge existing power structures? Editor: That's a perspective I hadn’t considered. I was so focused on the image itself. Curator: The attire is very formal, which seems like a statement in itself. What do you think the subjects' fashion conveys? Editor: Perhaps it speaks to the importance of this occasion, of presenting their best selves. Curator: Exactly. It could be a celebration, a funeral, but either way it's a moment of collective strength, an affirmation of their presence in a world that often tries to erase them. Editor: I’m starting to see the photograph in a whole new light. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Curator: My pleasure! Art is a powerful tool for understanding our shared history and building a more equitable future.
