Lech Jankowski made this diptych painting called Niebioskości with paint that looks like it was laid on thick, like frosting. I am drawn to the surfaces of these panels: their textures, colors, and that gritty surface, worked and reworked, full of chance encounters. The paint is opaque, it covers everything, even the light. There are embedded horizontal bars like windows or blinds. It's easy to see how the piece was made, stroke by stroke, with the kind of directness I love. Each gesture is visible, and it all adds up to this unified whole. The artist is maybe pointing to the idea that a painting can be an ongoing conversation, a place for experimentation, somewhere things can stay open and unresolved. I look at these two panels and I wonder, what is the real horizon?
