Lech Jankowski made this diptych, "Trompeten zum Hören von Fußboden mit Pause," which translates to "Trumpets for Listening to Floor with Pause," probably using oil paint. The surface has so much texture, it's like a relief. The color palette is really subdued, almost monochromatic. Looking at the surface, you can tell that Jankowski didn’t just want to represent something; he wanted to create an experience. There are these curious, dark forms that look like trumpets that appear almost like an after thought. The floorboards create parallel lines heading to a vanishing point, like a stage. The textures throughout have a way of catching and scattering light in unpredictable ways. It reminds me a little of Giorgio Morandi's still life paintings, where everyday objects are imbued with a sense of mystery and quiet contemplation. Art is this conversation across time, right? It's all about how we see and feel and then try to make sense of it.
