Hubert Bekman made this letter "B," probably a print, sometime in the 20th century. There's such confidence in the crisp graphic lines and the stark contrast between black and white, but also a playful sensibility in the way he reinterprets the letter "B" into something new. Imagine him at his desk, carefully planning the composition, and then carving away at the block to create this image. It reminds me a bit of other artists who play with typography, like Kurt Schwitters or even some contemporary graphic designers. There is a sense of reduction, in stripping away the unessential, and then, of building something completely new, a kind of symbolic and abstract form of communication. You get a real sense of that dialogue here, a conversation across time.
