Curator: Charles Robert Leslie's ‘Slender Courting Anne Page,’ currently held at the Tate, presents a scene of courtship drama on a modestly sized canvas. Editor: Immediately, I am struck by how the figures are positioned in relation to one another and to the light, creating this almost theatrical tension in the composition. Curator: Indeed, Leslie, active in the 19th century, often depicted scenes from literature. He was celebrated for bringing literary narratives to life, reflecting the cultural value placed on stories in British society. Editor: Note how the artist employs a darker palette, but illuminates the figures, drawing the eye directly to them. The use of shadows adds to the sense of mystery. Curator: Leslie’s work appealed to the rising middle class, eager to engage with culture and narratives that reflected social norms and aspirations of the time. Editor: It's as if Leslie captured a fleeting moment, filled with dramatic potential, skillfully using light and form to evoke such a strong emotional presence. Curator: The art market then was heavily influenced by literary taste; Leslie tapped into a potent force, securing his place in the artistic landscape. Editor: Ultimately, it shows how compositional techniques and artistic decisions can amplify narrative effect, enhancing our engagement.

Leslie was one of the most successful nineteenth-century painters of subjects from English literature. His interpretation of an author's text was invariably true to its spirit. Through a study of costume and appropriate backgrounds he succeeded in giving scenes like this one from Shakespeare an authentic period flavour. This picture is painted over an engraving of a work which Leslie exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1825. The subject comes from Shakespeare's play 'The Merry Wives of Windsor'. Leslie married in 1825 and his original decision to paint 'Slender Courting' might have been prompted by his own pre-nuptial experiences. Gallery label, August 2004
