Editor: Here we have a pair of porcelain sculptures made by the Doccia Porcelain Manufactory sometime between 1740 and 1755. Aren't they sweet? I’m initially struck by how delicate and, dare I say, cheeky, these winged figures are. They look like they’re up to no good! What catches your eye in these mischievous fellows? Curator: Oh, absolutely, cheeky is the word! I feel like they've been caught mid-scheme. The Doccia Manufactory, based near Florence, was known for its incredibly detailed work, and these “terms,” as they’re called, really exemplify that. What's fascinating to me is how they bridge the gap between sculpture and functional object. They were probably meant to adorn a wall or a piece of furniture. Imagine them perched above a doorway, forever frozen in that mischievous pose. Do you see how their wings are positioned, almost as if they’re whispering secrets? Editor: Yes! And the way their little hands are clasped together, like they're plotting something. So, they’re called “terms”…what does that mean? Curator: A term is a sculptural form, typically a bust or a figure that tapers into a pillar or pedestal. They were hugely popular in ancient Rome, revived during the Renaissance, and were all the rage again in the 18th century. These porcelain cherubs put a playful Rococo spin on a very classical form, don’t you think? Editor: Definitely playful! I hadn’t really thought about the classical connection before. I just saw cute little porcelain figures. Curator: Isn't that the beauty of art? There's always more to discover, even in the seemingly simplest of things. And sometimes, it's the cute little porcelain figures that lead you down the most fascinating rabbit holes! Editor: This was so much fun! I'm seeing those little schemers in a whole new light! Thanks!
