Oleg Holosiy made this painting, 'Rapprochement trajectories,' and from the looks of it, he's used paint and maybe ink on a large canvas. I wonder what it was like for Holosiy standing there, figuring out how to make a painting that looks like not much at all, with the golden background and dark scribbles. You see the horizon line made with horizontal strokes and then more lines above that look like clouds or birds. It makes you wonder what he was thinking, putting these marks on the canvas. It's like he's mapping out a space, a feeling, with just the barest of means. There is a sense of simplicity and directness, a focus on the basic elements of mark-making. The texture is smooth, but you get the sense of Holosiy's hand moving across the surface. His brushstrokes are confident and purposeful, which is interesting because it feels so loose. What’s cool about painting is that it’s all conversation – artists responding to artists over time. Every painting is part of this big, ongoing discussion, and it’s up to us to jump in and see what we can add to it.
