Martha Boto made this painting "Integration" on wood with oil, and I can imagine her, brush in hand, layering up those blues and whites. I love how she's balanced these strange shapes, like floating cells, with these wireframe cubes. I wonder if Boto felt like she was building a world, thinking through space and color? Look closely, and you can see how the paint sits on the surface, a record of each gesture. I bet she was inspired by the conversations that were happening around her, maybe tapping into the geometric abstraction of the Concrete Art movement. Painting is, after all, a way of thinking aloud, and Boto is in conversation with other painters across time, each of them pushing the boundaries of what a painting can be. The work embodies this constant exchange of ideas and seeing.
