The square, with its roots in ancient philosophy and mathematics, symbolizes stability, order, and the earth. Notice how Costigliolo plays with this expectation. The squares, scattered and tilted, disrupt the inherent harmony we associate with them. This disruption echoes a similar unease that can be found in early Renaissance paintings, where the imposition of a grid attempts to contain humanistic emotion. The bright yellow background clashes beautifully with the black and red shapes; colors that evoke powerful emotions of joy, fear, and warning.
