George Bunker made this pastel drawing called ‘Field #3’ sometime between 1923 and 1991. It’s all soft pastels and horizontal lines, so the whole thing feels pretty calm and dreamy. Looking closely, the drawing is made up of layers and layers of short, hatched strokes. You can really see Bunker working the pastel, pushing it around the paper to build up the color and texture. In the clouds, there’s this unexpected burst of pink that feels like a secret. The whole piece looks like he's channeling Milton Avery's minimalist approach to landscape. The gray and blue tones give it a quiet, almost melancholic mood. Bunker’s work really reminds me that art is all about seeing and feeling. It's not about showing off skill, it's a record of a feeling. What do you feel?
