Karl Wiener made this drawing on paper, Steinberg, sometime before 1949. Look at the way he’s layered the colors! Did he start with the sky? It's as if each mark is searching to find the place where the landscape comes into focus. I can almost feel Wiener standing there, squinting at the scene. He seems to be thinking about tone, about how dark the sky is, and how that darkness makes the wall and the trees glow. There's a real sense of immediacy and intimacy, right? The thin paint gives it a delicate touch, but the strokes of color are bold, almost urgent. Imagine the brush dancing across the surface, trying to catch the essence of the place. The way the light filters through those trees reminds me of Corot. Ultimately, art is like a conversation across time, where artists borrow from each other, remixing and reimagining ideas, and offering their unique take on what it means to see and feel the world.
