Karl Wiener made this watercolor painting, Naturstudie XXX, at some point during his lifetime. It evokes an expansive view of nature, with a vibrant sky and a dense tree line. But the artwork is also a study – the title indicates that there are at least twenty-nine other similar works. Born in Vienna in 1901, Wiener’s artistic education would have involved the traditional study of nature, to create a foundation for more complex compositions. But by the early twentieth century, landscape painting no longer held the same cultural significance it once did. The rise of photography challenged painting’s role in representing the world. The horrors of the first world war also changed the role of art, as artists looked for new ways to express their subjective experience. Studying Karl Wiener's biography and the institutional context of Viennese art academies in the early 20th century can enrich our understanding of his artistic intentions and how he might have conceived of the role of art in a rapidly changing world.
