Luis Feito made this painting, "Abstracto en grises y azules," with an approach that feels intuitive, a process of layering and removing. The colour palette is restrained, mostly greys and blues, giving it a sense of quiet contemplation. Up close, you can really see the materiality of the work. The paint isn't applied smoothly but seems to have been scrubbed, rubbed, and layered, creating a textured surface that invites touch. There's a little patch of blue in the upper right corner that looks almost like a celestial body against a cloudy sky. The blues throughout the painting shimmer against the grays; areas of the canvas are built with layers of paint and other areas have been scrubbed back, allowing colors and textures to vibrate. Feito’s work reminds me a little of Antoni Tàpies, who also explored texture and materiality in his paintings. In the end, what’s so compelling about this piece is its openness. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t have to shout; it can whisper and still be profound.
