"Wars of Charlemagne" was created by Jean Fouquet. Fouquet worked as court painter to Louis XI, and his work reflects the increasing opulence of the French court. This image depicts Charlemagne in the midst of battle, one of several illustrations painted by Fouquet to visualize the emperor’s life. The lavish use of gold leaf would have been a status symbol, intended to display the wealth and power of Fouquet’s patron. While this style of painting borrows from the conventions of illuminated manuscripts, it goes one step further, incorporating elements from panel paintings. Fouquet’s images helped to shape perceptions of French identity, and his unique approach broke free from traditional representations to create something entirely new. The artist blends historical elements with his contemporary world.
