This small bronze coin, known as a rekenpenning, was created in 1609 as a commemorative piece for Albrecht and Isabella of Austria, the rulers of the Southern Netherlands. The front of the coin displays a central eye surrounded by radiating eyes, symbolizing vigilance, a key virtue for rulers. The inscription "S[emper] VIGIL[antia] ART[em] REGN[are]" translates to "Always vigilance is the art of ruling". The back of the coin features the coat of arms of the rulers. This rekenpenning is a fascinating example of how even seemingly simple objects can tell us about history and the power of symbols.
