This little print was made in October 1918, and while the artist is anonymous, they were working for a series called ‘La Mode par Fried’ so we know their interests lay in fashion. And look at the limited palette! That lilac-y periwinkle dress, those slightly sickly yellow gloves, and that big black umbrella - it’s like the artist was trying to capture the drabness of wartime, but still couldn't resist a little bit of elegance. You know, I can just imagine the artist sitting in their studio, trying to make something beautiful out of the everyday. Did they think anyone would be looking at this little fashion plate a hundred years later? I think of all the conversations between artists across time, inspiring each other to create, to push boundaries, to find new ways of seeing the world. And even though this is just a small, anonymous work, it's part of that conversation.
