This fashion plate, titled 'Très Parisien, 1923, No 5' is from an unknown artist, and I’m guessing it's made with some kind of printmaking technique. It's got this delicate, almost stenciled effect, like a process of layering colors and shapes to create this flapper dream. I am drawn to the way the dress is rendered, the way the artist suggests texture and form with minimal means, and the way the light lavender acts as a grounding to the more fanciful decorative aspects. It's all about the interplay between line and color, surface and depth, just like building up layers in a painting. There is a mark making at the middle of the dress, where you can see a triangular shape, that almost looks like petals of a flower. It's simple, but it speaks to the idea of fashion as an art form, a way of expressing oneself through color, line, and form. This image reminds me of the work of Erté, a fashion illustrator, he captured the spirit of the Art Deco era, with his elegant designs and bold use of color. Art is just a big conversation, right?
