Soledad Sevilla’s untitled work presents us with a field of red and white hues on a foundation of grid lines. The symbolic nature of color, particularly red, has deep roots in our cultural memory. Think of the ritualistic and symbolic use of red ochre in ancient burial sites—red representing lifeblood, vitality, and even transformation. We find echoes of this in the Renaissance, in the robes of cardinals and the drapery of powerful figures, where red signified status and authority. Yet, Sevilla’s application diffuses these concrete associations. The bleeding of red into white, over a structured grid, suggests a tension between the visceral and the rational, the organic and the constructed. This dynamic recalls the psychological struggle between chaos and order, emotion and intellect. The grid, a symbol of modernity, is being overtaken, perhaps a commentary on the dominance of instinct and passion over reason. Consider how these elements engage us, stirring subconscious associations, and reminding us that artistic expression is a continuum, with colors carrying echoes of history, resurfacing in new forms.
