Andy Warhol made this 'Shadows' painting, sometime before his death in 1987, with paint, and probably a screen. Look at the way the red and blue meet; it's not a clean line, it kind of dissolves. That makes me think about how ideas blur when you're making art. The surface is interesting, too. It's not flat, not like a photograph. You can see the texture, the way the paint sits on the canvas. It's almost like you can feel the process, Warhol pushing the paint around, figuring it out as he goes. There's this little red spot, floating in the blue, like a mistake, or a secret. Warhol's shadows remind me of Cy Twombly, they both leave things open, not everything is defined. It's like they're inviting you to finish the painting in your own mind. Art isn't about answers, it's about questions, about possibilities.
