This photograph is part of Elina Brotherus’ series “One Minute Sculptures with Erwin Wurm”. You see two figures intertwined, engaged in a fleeting, almost absurd pose. I can imagine Brotherus and Wurm, maybe in a conversation about weight, support, and the ephemeral nature of human connection, deciding to stage this, probably laughing as they attempt to hold the position. Look at the strain in the lifter's posture, the vulnerability of the lifted. There’s a sense of performance and play, but also of trust and vulnerability. It reminds me of Fluxus performances or even some of the body art from the 1970s, where the body becomes a sculptural element, a site of experimentation. Brotherus often explores the human figure in relation to its environment, and here the stark, industrial backdrop contrasts with the intimacy of the human embrace. They're testing the limits of what a photograph can capture. Each click of the shutter is a new investigation into the possibilities of time, space, and the human form.
