This is an ex libris, or bookplate, by E.M. Riera, realized with engraving techniques. The composition presents a central grouping of figures, enclosed by an ornate, decorative border. The lack of color intensifies the focus on the line work and the shapes created within the composition, leaving an austere impression. At the forefront, a woman and a swan intertwine, creating a spiraling form that guides the viewer's eye. To the left, a smaller figure, perhaps a nymph or cupid, echoes the curves of the central subject. The heavy lines define forms while also creating a play of light and shadow, adding depth. The symmetrical arrangement of vases and mythical creatures along the top and sides of the border stabilizes the composition, while also framing and containing the more fluid central elements. The choice of figures, the symmetry, and detailed engraving situate this work within a tradition that seeks to unite classical forms with the personal mark of its owner, J.B. Rietstap. As such, it becomes an intellectual statement as much as a marker of ownership.
