Pol Craps etched "Schapenkudde met herder op een heideweg," or "Flock of Sheep with Shepherd on a Heath Road," capturing a timeless scene. The shepherd and his flock on a country road are central motifs, evoking pastoral traditions harking back to biblical times, where the shepherd is often a symbol of divine guidance. The figure of the shepherd is an ancient archetype. We see echoes of this motif in classical antiquity, where Hermes Psychopompos guided souls. The shepherd is a protective, paternal figure, a bearer of order amidst the chaos. But look closer: notice the road and the diminishing view towards the village, a physical path and perhaps a life path. The heath road and the flock subtly suggest our human journey. The image touches something deep within us, a collective memory of simpler, more connected times. This yearning for a natural, harmonious existence persists, reappearing in art across centuries, each time colored by the anxieties and desires of its age.
