Editor: So, this is Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s woodblock print, "Gama Sennin's Animus," part of the series *Ibaraki no keshin*. The figure floats mysteriously above a gathering of toads. What's your take on this unusual composition? Curator: It’s a visual poem, isn't it? Kuniyoshi, a master of ukiyo-e, blends the mundane with the magical. Notice how the seemingly weightless figure contrasts with the earthy groundedness of the toads. It's as if he’s asking, "Where does the spirit truly reside, in the heavens or in the mud?" What feelings stir within you when you observe this piece? Editor: That’s interesting. I hadn't considered the contrast so literally. I guess it makes me wonder about transformation, about what's possible. Curator: Exactly! Kuniyoshi was a trickster, using humor and folklore to hint at deeper truths. It’s a playful reminder that enlightenment can be found in the most unexpected places.
